Night Market (Pasar Malam) : Asia Traditional Open Space Food Market

Night markets are commonly known as Pasar Malam by the locals, which literally means night market, "pasar" being related to "bazaar" in Persian or also the meaning "market" in Malay/Indonesian, and "malam" meaning "night".


Unlike other Asia countries; their night market are fixed at one location and it have fixed operating timing, without failed, you can visit the place anytime to purchase your foodies and others goods for daily usage.


In Singapore, our night market always appear at random locations, it doesn't have any fixed venues and it is seasonal events due to limited spaces and often only stay at one location not more than 3 weeks before shifting to the next location; Amidst of the shifting, the number of stalls and various of foods may changes, which means that's you often see different foods variety, entertainment & shopping available.


Where can we find the night market? Usually it's next to our Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) Station Open Space with less than 5 mins walking distance, here are some frequent location that they will setup the night market;

  • Purple Line: Punggol, Sengkang, Hougang, Kovan, Serangoon, BoonKeng, Little India, Chinatown.

  • Green Line: Pasir Ris, Tampines, Simei, Bedok, Geyland, Bugis, Tanjong Pagar, Redhill, Queenstown, Commonwealth, Clementi, Jurong.

  • Red Line: Toa Payoh, Bishan, Ang Mo Kio, Yio Chu Kang, Yishun, Sembangwang, Admiralty, Woodlands, Marsiling, Yew Tee, Chao Chu Kang, Bukit Batok.

When can we find the night market? There is no guarantee that the night market are available at all times, sequence there is cool of times that totally don't have any night market in Singapore, here are some seasonal tips;

  • High Season (November through early January, June and July)

  • Shoulder Season (mid-January through May)

  • Low Season (August through October, except mid-September)

What is night market operating hours? Most of their operating hours starting from 11am onwards to 10pm, sometimes they may extend to 11+ pm to served more crowds.

Source1: Mega Food Street Night Market, often located in the east part of Singapore, such as Punggol, Sengkang, Hougang, Tampines, Ang Mo Kio, Toa Payoh, Jurong.


There is 3 scales of Night market;

  • Small Night Market: usually not more than 11 food stalls with 1-2 clothes stalls and 15 catch machines or no at all

  • Medium Night Market: between 12-15 food stalls with 2-4 clothes stalls and 20 over catch machines

  • Mega Night Market: More than 16 food stalls with 2-3 clothes stalls, additional stalls selling 2nd hand items, 20 over catch machines, carnival for family and kids.

Multiples stalls with a lot of free seating spaces for customers, the place are wide and not so pack even with so many people.

Each Token cost about $1, but sometime they have special package like $10 for 12 token or $50 for 60 token, depending on the vendors.

In the Night Market, they sell clothes, handphone casing/holder, 2nd hand goods, fruits and household products all available but however, still depending the scales of the night markets.
